On 11 March 2013, Clarke announced that he had joined the Green Party, and will campaign as an Independent Green and stand as a Green Party candidate in the 2013 local elections. He is quoted as saying: "I left the Labour Party, and then discovered that really it had left me, I have battled on as an Independent to try to make a difference for local people and have had some successes, but now it is time to truly give the power back to the people. I have chosen to campaign and as an Independent Green and proudly display the Green Party Logo on the ballot paper".
"The council had to buy Stagecoach out of its lease on the Greyfriars bus station, this was done to the tune of £5.5m of Council Tax payers money being handed over to the bus company."
And with extra "unforseen" costs and the inevitable budget overruns; what will the eventual total be?
Here the bus station is "out of date", "in poor condition" and "despised by passengers". (sounds familiar!) The plan was to demolish it, but protesters (including English Heritage) have brought about a rethink. The refurbishment costs will still be high (£21 million is quoted) but Preston's station is four times the size of Greyfriars. An estimate of the price for a refurb of Northampton's old mausoleum is about £8 million.
But it would seem to be too late!
But fbb has an idea! Of which more anon.
