Logology And Other Stuff 2

Having composed yesterday's title, fbb discovered that "logology" is a real word.

Logology is the field of recreational linguistics, an activity that encompasses a wide variety of word games and wordplay.

That just about covers the idea of a logo (abbreviated from "logotype", literally a "word copy") but there is also a theological meaning.

For example, if theology is discourse concerning God, then it must be noted that there is a difference between "God" and the word "God." In relating the definition of logology to the term "theology," it then becomes clear that the correct meaning of theology is not "words about God" but instead "words about the word God."

Splendid! Now we know.

Here are five more logos!

Ferry, Ferry Stupid
The picture above illustrates one of the problems, namely yachts getting snagged on the chains which had been tightened to prevent the vessel getting stuck on the redesigned ramps. (picture and news item from September 2017)

The on-off tale of the floating bridge between East and West Cowes on the Isle of Wight has been very much off since the summer. A replacement launch has been provided by the Isle of Wight Council, but only at "busy times".
The "Folly Waterbus" has been providing an off-peak, evening and Sunday service, partly sponsored by Red Funnel ...
... but this may be withdrawn as passenger numbers, particularly in the evening make the service uneconomic.

But Floating Bridge is back from December 11th,
Oh yes it is.
All together now ...
Oh No it Isn't
By Wednesday 13th it was withdrawn again and was still out of service this weekend. The Council's we site has not been updated so thy say ...
Oh yes it is.
The floating bridge is currently operating an extended trial period.
Cars and passengers will be able to use it from 11 December for the normal fees. In addition, and in a gesture of goodwill, the council will allow free travel for foot passengers over the Christmas period between 23 December and 2 January 2018, inclusive. A late night service will also operate on Christmas eve and New Year’s eve to align with Red Funnel Services.
Oh no it isn't

Here Today and Goon Tomorrow Yesterday
fbb has been "enjoying" the latest edition of Railway Modeller (January 2018); enjoying in quotes because the magazine is thoroughly depressing. The quality of the layouts featured is so good that fbb will never (ever!) be able to match the skill of their builders.

This is a "O" gauge (7mm to the foot) Southern Region model ...
... centred on a "what-might-have-been" station at Milton Abbas.
One of its more unusual features is a timber wharf and yard.
But the an amusing touch is the name of the company running the yard.
Those of our readers who are past their prime (like fbb - who probably never had a prime!) may remember a Home Service programme on the wireless.
It was called "The Goon Show".

Two recurring characters we Henry Crun (note - only one "n") and Minnie Bannister ...
... seen here as puppets from the Telegoons series.

Henry and Minnie were elderly and often in totally ludicrous roles (firemen, lifeboat crew etc). A running joke was the length of time it took them to answer a knock on the door or a ring on the doorbell.

It is good to see that the decrepit twosome eventually settled down to a career in wholesale timber, especially as Henry's catchphrase was, "You can't get the wood, you know!"

Henry was voiced by Peter Sellers and Minnie by Spike Milligan.

Catch 22 Caught!
Long term blog readers will remember a company called Catch 22, operating in Blackpool.
The company, and particularly its boss, Philip Higgs ...
... has had a tortuous relationship with Beverley Bell, big cheese Traffic Commissioner.
Banned from operating buses back in 2016, Mr Higgs appealed and the results of his appeal have just been published in "Notices and Proceedings", the official organ of the commissioners.

Catch22bus Ltd PC1067540

A decision has been received from the Upper Tribunal following a hearing held on 5th September 2017 to consider an appeal against the decision of the Deputy Traffic Commissioner in respect of the licence held by Catch22bus Ltd (PC1067540).

The appeal does not succeed and the decisions of the Deputy Traffic Commissioner to revoke the licence and disqualify Philip Higgs for 12 months from holding or obtaining a PSV operator’s licence are confirmed and they will now take effect from 0001 hours on 18th February 2018.

Will Catch22 cease operating as commanded - or will another company "appear" under another licence holder to keep things going?

    ADVENT CALENDAR - 17
It is what the angels sang that is almost always misquoted.

 SPOILER ALERT

Time and time we read that Christmas is a time of "Peace and Goodwill to All Men" and there is nothing wrong with the idea. Except that it patently isn't true. Whilst we may play at bonhomie and kindness during the festive season it has often evaporated by 1st January.
So, either the angel was lying through his perfect teeth or we are missing something.

Let us look again at what Luke, the Gospel writer actually says.
“Don't be afraid! I am here with good news for you, which will bring great joy to all the people. This very day in David's town your Saviour was born - Christ the Lord! And this is what will prove it to you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

And the celestial choir continued:-

Suddenly a great army of heaven's angels appeared with the angel, singing praises to God:
“Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and peace on earth to those with whom he is pleased!

The real "peace and goodwill" is not a universal offer; it only comes to those "with whom God is pleased" - and that is a very different concept indeed.

The "different concept" is exactly what ChristMas is all about ...

... or should be!

Silent Night, Holy Night
All is calm, All is bright
Round yon virgin, mother and child
Holy infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace

Silent Night, Holy Night
Shepherds pray at the sight
Glory streams from heaven afar
Heavenly hosts sing hallelujah
Christ the Saviour is born
Christ the Saviour is born

  1. I thought Overground Network was after NSE, and was a poor forerunner of the current London Overground?
